The Enterprise That Moves

Why Digital Transformation Keeps Failing — and What Leaders Must Own to Fix It

16 chapters · Working draft v0.7 · Parts I and II drafted

The thesis

Transformation fails at the leadership layer before it fails anywhere else.

Not in the tooling, the vendor or the methodology. Underneath every failed program sits a decision nobody is making. It is usually a leader’s decision, and it usually stays unmade because nobody has named it.

Every transformation draws on the same six resources. At any moment, one of them is the decision nobody is making. The constraint moves, so the decision moves with it.

The book names the resources, says what a leader must own, and sets out a discipline for the calls only leaders can make. AI doesn’t change the argument. It multiplies whatever the organisation already is.

The book in four parts

  1. I

    Why It Keeps Failing

Three failures that look like execution problems and are not. Transformation theatre stands in for the real thing. A strategy is only what you fund at the expense of something else, and most strategies fund nothing. Delivery is a cost, and value is a different outcome. The gap between the two is where the money goes.

Part I diagnoses, and it ends on the decision nobody is making.

  2. II

    What Leaders Must Own

What a resource is, why it is finite, and what a leader cannot delegate. The capacity of people to absorb change is finite and biological, and nobody is counting it. Data, architecture and risk are three faces of one resource: what past decisions will cost next year. The scarcest resource is the leadership team’s attention.

Part II says what you own. It says nothing yet about how.

  3. III

    The Discipline: DECIDE

The method, one verb at a time. DECIDE is shown whole in a single scene and then taken apart. The resources are not argued again here.

    Declare
Decide what must win, and who owns it.
    Expose
See everything the enterprise is trying to do.
    Constrain
    Sequence it, or suffocate.
    Invest
Fund fully, or not at all.
    Defend
Vendors don’t own your strategy. You do.
    Evaluate
    Review is not reporting.
  4. IV

    The Enterprise That Moves

The institution, not the steps. ERP, CRM, portfolio management, BI and AI are one system of change, and DECIDE only holds if it runs through them as one loop. Systems aren’t accountable. Leaders are.

The aim is mobility, not speed: changing direction without chaos, built from consistency, not intensity.
